SMALL CHANGES IN version numbers can mean big benefits, as is the case with Apple's new system-software enhancements, QuickTime 2.1 and PlainTalk 1.4.
QuickTime 2.1. In this version, Apple adds support for sprites, or character animations, which appear in arcade games such as Mario Brothers. Now developers can use QuickTime to reliably play back such animations without having to write their own software for optimal playback speed or for sound synchronization.
Speaking of sound, QuickTime 2.1's Sound Manager 3.1 is now native for the PowerPC and includes support for several audio-compression formats, including IMA, a standard for 4:1 compression of CD-quality audio without loss of fidelity.
QuickTime 2.1 is available online at http://quicktime.apple.com for $9.95 or through APDA (716-871-6555) -- the price from the latter source wasn't set at press time.
PlainTalk 1.4. With the latest version of PlainTalk, Apple is getting closer to delivering natural-language interaction on the Mac.
For users of PowerPC-based computers, the new speech-recognition extension offers better voice interaction. The Speakable Items utility lets you place items in a designated folder to enable the Mac to respond to the names of these items. Also, you can now use the Push to Talk option to make the Mac listen only when you press a user-defined key. In a smart addition, Apple has added a command that lets you know what words PlainTalk can respond to.
Developers can also take advantage of the speech recognition of the Power Mac through a new toolbox. Later this fall, Reality Bytes will ship HAVOC, a multiplayer simulation that users can control through specific voice commands such as Stop or Faster, enhancing the playability and interaction of the game. Several other game and education-title developers are hoping to incorporate speech technology.
